Chapter One- Hello, Kitty!

Monday, 15 June, 1942

I had my birthday party on Sunday afternoon. We showed a film The Lighthouse Keeper with Rin-Tin-Tin, which my school friends thoroughly enjoyed. We had a lovely time. There were lots of girls and boys. Mummy always wants to know whom I’m going to marry. Little does she guess that it’s Peter Wessel; one day I managed, without blushing of flickering an eyelid, to get that idea right out of her mind. For years Lies Goosens and Sanne Houtman have been my best friends. Since then, I’ve got to know Jopie de Waal at the Jewish Secondary School. We are together a lot and she is now my best girl friend. Lies is more friendly with another girl, and Sanne goes to a different school, where she has made new friends.

일요일 오후에 내 생일 파티를 열었어. 린틴틴이 출연하는 “등대지기”라는 영화를 보여 주었더니 학교 친구들이 무척 좋아했어. 우린 정말 멋진 시간을 보냈어. 여자애들과 남자애들이 많이 있었어. 엄마는 내가 누구와 결혼할지 늘 알고 싶어 하셔. 그게 바롤 페터 베셀인 줄은 짐작도 하지 못하실 거야; 어느 날 나는 얼굴을 붉히거나 눈도 깜박거리지 않고 엄마가 그런 생각을 못하시게 해거든. 여러 해 동안 리스 호센스와 산느 하우트만이 나의 가장 친한 친구였어. 그 이후로 나는 유태인 중학교에 와서 요피 드 발을 알게 되었지. 우리는 같이 지내는 시간이 많아, 그 애는 이제 나와 가장 친한 여자 친구가 되었어. 리스는 다른 여자애와 더 친하게 지내고, 산느는 전학의 가서 새로운 친구들을 사귀었어.
