The cat deserves special description here because it was an extraordinary feline. It was a large and beautiful animal, entirely covered in shiny, thick black fur. The most remarkable thing, however, was its intelligence. This cat appeared to be very wise and seemed to understand everything my wife and I did, and everything we said.

In fact, my wife sometimes said that the cat was actually a witch in disguise. Of course, it was just an old-fashioned superstition that witches sometimes changed into black cats. My wife was not being serious. The only reason I mention it here is because it was one of the things I remembered about the cat.

His name was Pluto, and he was my favorite pet. I was the only one who fed him, and he always followed me around the house. When I went outside, it was difficult to prevent Pluto from following me onto the4 streets, where he would be in danger.

We – my wife and our many pets – lived in peace and happiness for several years. Our situation changed because I fell into a bad habit.

고양이는 아주 비범한 녀석이었기 때문에 특별히 설명을 할 만하다. 그것은 아주 크고 아름다운 동물이었으며, 온 몸이 빛나고 숱이 많은 검은 털로 덮여 있었다. 그러나 가장 놀라운 것은 그 녀석의 지능이었다. 그 고양이는 아주 영리해서 아내와 내가 하는 모든 행동이나 말을 이해하는 것만 같았다.

사실, 고양이는 원래 마녀가 둔갑한 것이라고 아내는 곧잘 말하곤 했다. 물론 마녀가 검은 고양이로 변하곤 한다는 것은 그저 구닥다리 미신일 뿐이다. 아내도 진심은 아니었다. 내가 지금 이 말을 하는 단 한 가지 이유는 그것이 내가 그 고양이에 대해 기억나는 것들 중 하나이기 때문이다.

고양이의 이름은 플루토였으며, 내가 가장 아끼는 애완동물이었다. 내가 가장 아끼는 애완동물이었다. 내가 밥을 주는 유일한 놈이었으며, 그 녀석은 집안에서 날 늘 따라다녔다. 내가 외출할 때면 플루토가 위험에 처할 수도 있는 거리로 따라 나오지 못하게 하는 게 여간 힘든 일이 아니었다.

우리- 나의 아내와 우리의 여러 애완동물들- 는 몇 년 동안 평온하고 행복하게 살았다. 내가 나쁜 습관에 빠지면서 상황은 변하게 되었다.
