Whenever I encountered a grown-up who seemed to be intelligent, I would experiment on him with  my drawing Number One, which I have always kept. I wanted to see if he under-stood anything.     But he would always answer, “That’s a hat.” Then I wouldn’t talk about boa constrictors or jungles  or  stars. I would put myself on his level and talk about bridge and golf and politics and neck-ties.  And my grown-up was glad to know such a reasonable person.  VII     On the fifth day, thanks again to the sheep, another secret of the little prince’s life was revealed to  me. Abruptly, with no preamble, he asked me, as if it were the fruit of a problem long pondered in  silence:  “If a sheep eats bushes, does it eat flowers, too?”  “A sheep eats whatever it finds.”  “Even flowers that have thorns?”  “Yes. Even flowers that have thorns.”  “Then what good are thorns?”  I didn’t know. At that moment I was very busy trying to unscrew a bolt that was jammed in my engine.  I was quite worried, for my plane crash was beginning to seem extremely serious, and the lack of  drinking water made me fear the worst.  “What good are thorns?”  The little prince never let go of a question once he had asked it. I was annoyed by my jammed bolt,   and I answered without thinking.  “Thorns are no good for anything – they’re just the flowers’ way of being mean!”  “Oh!”  But after a silence, he lashed out at me, with a sort of bitterness.  “I don’t believe you! Flowers are weak. They’re native. They reassure themselves whatever way they   can. They believe their thorns make them frightening…”

 조금이라도 똑똑한 사람을 만날 때면, 나는 늘 지니고 다니던 나의 제1호 그림을 보여 주면 실험해 보곤 했다. 그 사람이 정말 똑똑한지 알고 싶었던 것이다.

 하지만, 늘 같은 대답이었다. “그건 모자로군요.” 그러면 보아 뱀이나 밀림이나 별에 관한 이야기는 하지 않았다. 그들 수준에 맞춰 브리지 게임이나 골프, 정치, 넥타이에 관한 이야기를 꺼내곤 했다. 그러면 어른들은 뭘 좀 아는 친구를 만난 것에 기뻐했다.

 다섯째 되던 날, 또 다시 양 덕분에 어린 왕자의 비밀을 하나 더 알게 되었다. 그는 오랫동안 잠자코 생각하던 문제에 궁금한 게 생긴 듯 불쑥 내게 물었다.
“양이 덤불을 먹을 수 있다면 꽃도 먹을 수 있겠네?”
“양은 닥치는 대로 먹지.”
“가시가 있는 꽃도?”
“그럼, 가시가 있는 꽃까지 먹어.”
“그럼 가시는 무슨 소용이 있어?”
알게 뭐야. 그 순간 나는 엔진에 꽉 죄어 있는 나사를 푸느라 정신없었다. 나는 비행기의 고장이 상당히 심각하게 느껴지기 시작해서 여간 불안하지 않았고, 마실 물도 부족하여 최악의 상황을 걱정할 수밖에 없었다. 
“가시는 무슨 소용이 있지?”
어린 왕자는 한 번 질문하면 그냥 넘어가는 법이 없었다. 나는 꽉 죄어 있는 나사 때문에 짜증이 나서 아무렇게나 대답했다.
“가시는 아무 소용도 없어- 그건 그냥 꽃들이 못되게 구는 수단이라고!”
“아!” 하지만 얼마 동안 잠자코 있더니, 그는 다소 신랄하게 나를 공격했다.
“그건 거짓말이야! 꽃은 약해. 순진하고. 그들은 어떻게 해서든 스스로를 안심시키려는 거야. 꽃은 가시 때문에 자신이 무서워 보인다고 생각해.”
