My drawing Number Two looked like this:

The grown-ups advised me to put away my draw-ings of boa constrictors, outside or inside, and apply myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar. That is why I gave up, at the age of six, a magnificent career as an artist. I had been discouraged by the failure of my drawing Number One and of my drawing Number Two.
Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is exhausting for children to have to explain over and over again.
Co then I had to choose another career. I learned to pilot airplanes. I have flown almost everywhere in the world. And, as a matter of fact, geography has been a big help to me.
I could tell China from Arizona at first glance, which is very useful if you get lost during the night.
So I have met, in the course of my life, lots of serious people. I have spent lots of time with grown-ups. I have seen them at close range… which hasn’t improved my opinion of them.

어른들은 보아 뱀의 뱃속인지 거죽인지 하는 그림을 집어치우고 지리, 역사, 산수, 문법 공부에 전념 하라고 충고했다. 그것이 내가 여섯 살의 나이에, 화가로서의 멋진 경력을 단념한 이유이다. 나는 내가 그린 제1호, 제2호 그림이 성공을 거두지 못해 무척 실망했다.
어른들은 혼자서는 아무것도 이해하지 못하며, 일일이 설명해 줘야 하는 어린이들에게는 무척 피곤한 일이다.
그래서 그 후 나는 다른 직업을 택해야 했다. 나는 비행기 조종을 배웠다. 나는 세계의 거의 모든 곳을 날아다녔다. 그리고 사실을 말하면, 지리학은 나에게 큰 도움이 되었다. 나는 중국과 애리조나를 한눈에 구별할 수 있었는데 한밤중에 길을 잃어버렸을 때 매우 쓸모가 있었다.
나는 그렇게 살아가며 많은 진지한 사람들을 만났다. 어른들과 많은 시간을 함께 보낸 것이다. 나는 그들을 가까이에서 봤지만, 어른들에 대한 나의 생각은 나아지지 않았다.
