In those days I thought a lot about jungle adven-tures, and eventually managed to make my first drawing, with a colored pencil. My drawing Number One looked like this:

 I showed the grown-ups my masterpiece, and I asked them if my drawing scared them.

They answered, “Why should anyone be scared of a hat?” My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. Then I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, so the grown-ups could understand. They need always explanation.

나는 여섯 살 때 <진짜 이야기>라는 밀림에 관한 책에서 굉장한 그림을 보았다. 보아 뱀이 맹수를 삼키고 있는 장면이었다. 여기의 그림이 그것을 베낀 것이다. 그 책에는 이렇게 쓰여 있었다. “보아 뱀은 먹이를 씹지 않고 통째로 삼켜 버린다. 그 후에는 더 이상 꼼짝할 수 없게 되어서 소화하는데 필요한 6개월 동안 잠을 잔다.

그 당시 나는 밀림에서 벌어지는 사건에 대해 많이 생각했고 마침내 색연필로 내 생에 첫 번째 그림을 완성했다. 역사적인 그림 제1호는 이런 모습이다.

나는 내 걸작을 어른들에게 보여 주면서 무섭지 않느냐고 물었다. 어른들은 이렇게 대답했다. “모자가 왜 무서워야 하지?” 내 그림은 모자 그림이 아니었다. 보아 뱀이 코끼리 한 마리를 소화시키고 있는 그림이었다. 그래서 내가 보아 뱀의 뱃속을 그렸더니 어른들은 이해할 수 있었다. 어른들이란, 일일이 설명을 해줘야 한다.
