| The devil who ruined Tarras came to Ivan’s farm. He looked around for his brothers, but did not see them. All he saw were two holes in the ground.
Later that day, Ivan went into the forest to cut down some trees. He was going to build two houses, one for each brother. The little devil made the tree hard. Ivan could normally cut down fifty trees in one day. The wood was so hard that he could only cut down ten. He sat down, very tired.
The little devil was watching Ivan from high up in a tree.
“Ivan is too tired to continue. If the brothers have to live in one house, they will argue.”
The little devil bean to dance for joy in the branches. He did not see Ivan stand up. With a mighty swing of his axe, Ivan hit the tree. Before the devil could escape, the tree was cut in one blow. The little devil fell down and Ivan found it. |

타라스를 망하게 한 둘째 도깨비가 이반 네 농장으로 왔다. 둘째 도깨비는 형제들을 찾았지만 그들은 보이지 않았다. 둘째 도깨비가 본 것은 땅에 난 두 개의 구멍뿐이었다.
그날 오후, 이반은 나무를 베기 위해 숲으로 갔다. 이반은 두 채의 집을 지어 형들에게 한 채씩 나누어 줄 생각이었다. 둘째 도깨비는 나무를 단단하게 만들었다. 이반은 평소에는 하루에 오십 그루 정도의 나무를 벨 수 있었다. 그런데 나무들이 너무 단단해서 겨우 열 그루밖에 못 베어냈다. 이반은 너무 지쳐 주저 앉았다.
둘째 도깨비는 나무의 높은 가지에서 이반을 지켜보고 있었다.
“이반은 너무 지쳐서 계속 할 수 없을 거야. 형제들이 모두 한 집에서 살아야 된다면 서로 싸우게 될 테지.”
둘째 도깨비는 기쁨에 겨워 가지 위에서 춤을 추기 시작했다. 그러느라 둘째 도깨비는 이반이 일어서는 것을 보지 못했다. 이반은 있는 힘껏 도끼를 휘둘렀다. 둘째 도깨비가 미쳐 피하기도 전에 나무가 한방에 베어졌다. 도깨비는 나무에서 떨어졌고 이반은 그를 발견했다.
