“A mushroom!” The little prince was now quite pale with rage. “For millions of years flowers have
been producing thorns. For millions of years sheep have been eating them all the same. And it’s not
serious, trying to understand why flowers go to such trouble to produce thorns that are good for
nothing? It’s not important, the was between the sheep and the flowers? It’s no more serious and
more important than the numbers that fat red gentleman is adding up?
Suppose I happen to know a unique flower, one that exists nowhere in the world except on my
planet,one that a little sheep can wipe out in a single bite one morning, just like that, without even
realizing what he’s doing-that isn’t important?” His face turned red now, and he went on.
“If someone loves a flower of which just one example exists among all the millions and millions of
stars, that’s enough to make him happy when he looks at the stars. He tells himself, ‘My flower’s up
there somewhere…’ But if the sheep eats the flower, then for him it’s as if, suddenly, all the stars
went out. And that isn’t important?” |

내가 우연히 내 별 외에는 세상 어디에도 없는 단 하나의 꽃을 알게 되었다고 생각해 봐. 어느 날 아침 작은 양이 자기가 무슨 짓을 하는 줄도 모르고 그 꽃을 한 입에 없애 버릴 수도 있는데, 그게 중요한 일이 아니라고?” 그는 이제 얼굴이 붉어져서는 계속 말했다. “만약 누군가 수백만 개의 별들 중에서 단 한 송이밖에는 없는 꽃을 사랑한다면, 그 사람은 별들을 바라보는 것만으로도 행복할 거야. 그는 속으로 말하겠지. ‘저기 어딘가에 내 꽃이 있겠구나.’ 하지만, 양이 그 꽃을 먹어버린다면, 그에게는 마치 별들이 모두 갑자기 빛을 읽는 것 같을 거야. 그런데 그게 대단치 않다는 말이야?”
