“What day of the month is it?” asked the Hatter. Alice thought for a moment. “The fourth.” The Hatter looked at his large pocket watch and said, “Two days wrong! I knew it wasn’t right to put butter in the works.” He looked angrily at the March Hare. “But it was the best butter,” replied the March Hare. He took the watch from the Hatter and looked at it sadly. Then, to Alice’s surprise, he put it in his cup of tea. He looked at it again.

앨리스가 잠깐 생각했다. “4일이에요.”

모자 장수가 자신의 커다란 회중시계를 보며 말했다. “이틀이 틀려! 기계 부품에 버터를 바르면 안 된다니까.”

“하지만 그건 최고급 버터였어.”3월 토끼가 대답했다. 그는 모자 장수에게서 시계를 빼앗아 애처롭게 들여다보았다. 그러고 나서, 앨리스가 놀랍게도, 그는 자기 찻잔에 시계를 넣었다.

그는 시계를 다시 한번 들여다보았다.
