Chapter One- Hello, Kitty!

Sunday, 14 June, 1942

On Friday, June 12^th, I woke up a six o’clock and no wonder, it was my birthday. But of course I was not allowed to get up at that hour, so I had to control my curiosity until a quarter to seven. Then I could bear it no longer, and went to the dining room, where I received a warm welcome from Moortje (the car). Soon after seven I went to Mummy and Daddy and then to the sitting room to undo my presents. The first to greet me was you, possibly the nicest of all. Then on the table there were a bunch of roses, a plant, and some peonies, and more arrived during the day.

1942년 6월 14일 일요일

6월 12일 금요일에 나는 6시에 일어났는데 그건 당연했어. 내 생일이었으니까. 하지만 난 그렇게 일찍 이러 나서는 안되었기 때문에 7시 15분 전까지는 호기심을 누르며 참아야 했어. 그러다가 더 이상 견딜 수 없어서 식당으로 갔더니 무르체가 날 반갑게 맞아 주었어. 7시가 되자마자 난 엄마 아빠에게 갔어 그러고는 선물을 풀어 보기 위해 거실로 갔지. 날 제일 먼저 반겨준 것이 바로 너였는데, 아마 가장 멋진 선물이었던 것 같아. 그리고 테이블 위에는 장미 한 다발, 화분 하나, 작약 몇 송이가 놓여 있었고, 그날 하루 동안 더 많은 선물이 도착했어.
